Few weeks back, we had an unfortunate situation while clubbing in to another quite supposedly-to-be-prominent club. Each of us, as their 'honoured' guests, were charged $10 per head (their members were $8/head)and were promised (at least on their supposedly-popular website) new canSs of balls per each court.
Well, it didnt come thru. We had to be contented with a very old, skinless and worn out balls. Yiikkes !!!
Meanwhile, I came into this interesting bit of info whilst doing some research on balls.
"Should economy minded beginners be advised to reduce tennis expenses by using worn balls for practice sessions?"
-"Beginners, trying to economize on balls, frequently practice with used balls that have become light as a result of wearing down the material cover until only the skin is left (aka no fuzzy yellow wool/nylon felt). Skinned balls are impossible to control effectively, so that practising with them may induce poor stroke habits. Give the skinless wonders to the dog, and give yourself a chance to start on the right track toward a lifetime of enjoyable tennis"
